How to Make a Discord Bot for Free (Hosting Included, No Coding)
Make your own Discord bot for free: create the application, copy the token, set the intents, and get it running without renting a server. What the free plan includes and when to upgrade.
You can have your own Discord bot running today without paying anything and without writing code. The two parts that usually cost people money or time are the bot itself and keeping it online. Here is how to get both for free, and where the limits are.
What you need
- A Discord account and a server you manage.
- A free ServaDiscord account.
- Ten minutes.
Step 1: Create a Discord application
Open the Discord Developer Portal, select New Application, give it a name and select Create. This application is your bot. Its name and avatar are what members will see.
Step 2: Copy the bot token
Open Bot, select Reset Token, confirm and copy the new token.
Treat the token like a password. Anyone who has it can control your bot, so never post it publicly or commit it to source control.
Step 3: Turn on the intents
Still under Bot, enable Presence Intent, Server Members Intent and Message Content Intent, then save. Intents are what let the bot see members and messages, which features like welcome messages and moderation need.
Step 4: Connect the bot to ServaDiscord
In the setup wizard, enter a bot name if you want one and paste the token. Select Finish Setup, then Start Building.
That is the whole setup. The wizard stores your bot configuration in your workspace. It does not verify the token or invite the bot for you, so check the token is correct before moving on.
Step 5: Add features
From the workspace, add modules to the canvas: welcome messages, moderation, tickets, modmail, autoresponders, timed messages and more. Each one is configured in a panel, with no code.
Where the free hosting comes in
When you build a bot yourself, hosting is the hidden cost: you need somewhere to run it around the clock, and you have to keep it updated. With ServaDiscord, hosting is included. You configure the bot and ServaDiscord runs it for you, so there is no server to rent.
What the free plan includes
The free plan is a real starting point, with clear limits:
| Free | |
|---|---|
| Workspaces, servers and bots | 1 each |
| Interactions per month | 1,000 |
That is enough for a small community or to test a design. Paid plans lift the limits: Single Workspace is $10/month ($8.50/month billed yearly) and adds unlimited interactions, and Multi Workspace is $20/month ($17/month billed yearly) for up to 15 workspaces, servers and bots.
When to upgrade
Stay on free while one server and 1,000 interactions a month are enough. Move up when you hit that interaction ceiling, or when you manage more than one community.
